Records Restoration and Archive Preservation

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

Museums, libraries and other organizations have the important and vital job of preserving historical archives and books for future generations. The best way for institutions like these to prevent document and archive loss is to implement storage techniques that will protect valuable articles against such catastrophes as flood or mold outbreaks.

Though digital archiving is becoming more prevalent, there remain certain types of documents that just can’t be stored digitally. Documents like the Declaration of Independence, for instance, must be maintained in their physical form. It is for posterity’s sake that we keep priceless pieces of American history safe.

It is not always true that older the documents are more susceptible to damages than newer pieces. Many modern documents are printed on paper that has been processed to such an extent that it is also extremely fragile. This is why all important documents should be stored with the same care and attention to detail, regardless of whether they were created in the 1970s or the 17th century.

Institutions like libraries and national archives must take physical inventory and make an assessment of their pieces. Older leather-bound books are surprisingly resilient to the aging process and motorcycle accident attorneys Louisiana damage because the leather used prior to the 17th century was of much higher quality. Water damage can do the most damage to coated paper because it tends to absorb more water than its non-coated counterparts. Coated documents should be stored in easy to auto insurance specialist and manage areas. Books and papers created before the 1800s will absorb about 20 percent more water than documents created today.

Archival file boxes are one of the best assurances against flood damage to books and documents. A paper archival box will absorb a large amount of the water, protecting their contents from extensive damage that can occur in an area that gets an unexpected amount of water, whether from broken pipes or a major flood. Place archival boxes on sturdy shelving well off the ground but not so high that the documents would experience damage should they fall. Storage tubs are a popular way to keep documents safe, but make sure the tubs you choose are waterproof and airtight. Tubs can be dangerous should water seep in some way because the lack of ventilation will cause mold to form very quickly. Make sure to avoid stacking a large number of document storage boxes on top of each other as the weight can damage the documents or book binding over a long period of time.

Contact a restoration specialist if your archived documents somehow become water damaged. Using state-of-the-art technologies, document restoration specialists are often able to safely and effectively return your books and papers to near-original condition. Where possible, find a service that can provide environmentally friendly and safe processes like a desiccant air-drying or vacuum-freeze drying systems. These will often allow you to access your documents faster than other methods.

Knowing the types of documents you are looking to preserve, proper storage techniques and the help of a good document restoration service can go a long way to properly preserving archived documents and books for several generations.

Planning A Bike-a-Thon Fundraiser

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

A Bike-A-Thon Fundraiser is a great way for a non-profit group to make money. Of course proper planning is essential. As with almost anything, Wyoming truck accident lawyers amount of preparation you do will be in direct proportion to the success of your Bike-a-Thon fundraiser.

Pre-planning preparation is the key difference between just another fundraiser bike event and an unforgettable experience, which will be remembered all year until next year’s annual Bike-a-Thon Fundraiser. Let’s face it raising money for your non-profit group is not easy and planning a successful fundraiser is a lot of work with no guarantees. Our mission of course, is to take as much of the guessing out of the equation as possible, giving you useful information, tips and experience learned from actual trial and error.

If this article can save you from the mistakes we have made along the way, then you are that much further ahead. Although a Bike-a-Thon is one of the easiest fundraisers, probably about as much work as putting together a car wash fundraiser or silent auction, it still has its idiosyncrasies and important details to consider.

One issue you will most likely have to deal with is getting a city permit to host your fundraiser event. Generally, these permits are not that difficult to get, but do not be surprised to find yourself battling a little bureaucracy along the way. You may be required to have “event insurance” which you can obtain from a local insurance broker or if you are part of a larger Non-profit Group, that might be a place to start looking for insurance resources. How much are event permits at the municipal level?

Well, your city may have waivers for non-profit groups, so be sure to ask, some cities do. Most do not, so you can expect your permit to be anywhere from a nominal filing fee of $30-60 or somewhere between $100 to several hundred dollars depending on which city departments have to sign off on it.

If your event will have over 100 riders or up into the thousands of riders, you may be required to close off roads, pay for off-duty traffic police, a cone-service and all sorts of other anticipated costs, which may be prohibitive or you may decide it’s worth it, but this also adds to the size and complexity of your fundraiser planning. If things get too out of control, you may want to put yourself on the City Council Calendar to request a waiver of fees or funds from the city to pay the fees.

This is one reason you need to schedule your Bike-a-Thon fundraiser a couple of months ahead of time from your actual first meeting planning date; rushing your fundraiser together can create problems down the road for your participants or riders. For instance, what if your route crosses state owned highways or uses a portion of them, well, then you may be required to get a state Department of Transportation permit too. Also realize that some roads are county maintained and you know how the government works, one more level of paperwork to forge through for you.

Next, you will need permission from the property owner or major tenant to meet in their shopping center or industrial area that is along your route for the starting point. They may require certificates of insurance or additional insured certificates to protect themselves from injury lawsuits if someone falls off their bike or gets run over in the parking lot. Getting such permission might be easy, but could also take a week or two, depending on holidays and weekends.

The Bicycle Messenger Emergency Fund

Friday, November 28th, 2008

The Bicycle Messenger Emergency Fund (BMEF) is a 501 c3 non-profit organization that helps bicycle messengers who have been injured. The Fund provides emergency compensation to bike messengers who are hurt on the job. Any bicycle messenger that is hurt while working is eligible to receive a $300 check to help get through their first week after an injury.

In addition to helping bike messengers domestically, the Bicycle Messenger Emergency Fund is equipped to send money to any messenger hurt anywhere in the world. They do this to provide a boost, both mentally and emotionally, to the New Jersey car accident lawyers messenger. On the job injuries are difficult to cope with as they frequently make ordinary activities difficult. In addition, a person’s source of income is interrupted which makes life even more difficult. The emergency check is designed to lessen the initial strain of being, for the time, without a job.

Although many public spaces feel that bicycle messengers are a sort of nuisance as they are frequently seen zigging and zagging through traffic in an effort to make deliveries, they are an integral part of much of the world’s urban business. They are integral because they are capable of delivering auto insurance in New Mexico etc. in a way that is more efficient and frequently faster than any service that uses a car. Bicycle messengers are able to bypass slow traffic, take shortcuts that are not accessible by car, and skip all parking hassles. These traits make their delivery service very quick.

Any industry that requires signatures on originals or quick approval on a document makes use of a messenger of some sort at some point. These include law firms, ad agencies, property managers, government departments and organizations, the entertainment industry, service agencies, and a variety of other groups.

Unfortunately, as useful as they are, bike messengers frequently rely on their commissions per delivery. These are earned based on work ethic and customer satisfaction. In addition to relying on their own abilities, bike messengers are also faced with zero job security, no insurance, and a lack of injury compensation. This makes any injury quite dangerous to a bicycle messenger’s income. If the messenger can’t work because of an injury, he or she can lose his or her job.

Bicycle messengers are faced with a work environment with too many hazards to name. Cycling in heavy traffic is dangerous and injuries are not uncommon. Statistics show that bike messengers are rarely at fault when there is an accident, contrary to popular belief.

Laughter - The Best Medicine? (A Review Of “The-Know-It-All” By AJ Jacobs)

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

I’ve heard so many people tell me that I should read jokes and humor books from time to time. “Laughing a bit would do you a lot of good” they tell me. “That’s nice” I respond. I don’t know if I should take this as a subtle attack or as genuine well-intentioned advice. I think I’m a pretty funny guy, I even make up my own jokes. I don’t need to read silly books about it. That’s admitting defeat.

While reading “The 4-Hour Workweek” by Tim Ferriss, I found myself reading Chapter 8 - Outsourcing Life and hysterically laughing out loud all through buy Prozac online whole thing. cheap car insurance quote chapter wasn’t written by Tim Ferriss, it was written by A.J. Jacobs, an editor at Esquire Magazine (excerpts are available online). Who is this Jacobs guy and how can I find out more about him? He intrigued me.

A.J. Jacobs is a crazy guy. Crazy in an amusing and friendly way.

I read some articles he had written for Esquire. “My Life as a Hot Woman” explains how his son’s babysitter was 27 and single, and he talked her into letting him create a profile for her on Match.com and screen all her potential suitors. The article kept me glued to my computer and it was witty, extremely entertaining and had me laughing out loud on many occasions. This guy can write! He can make the simplest story seem hilariously funny, engrossing and entertaining. Then, I started to feel a bit jealous. I want to be as good of a writer as A.J.! One thing is humor. I feel I am a good writer, but lacking humor in my writing. How can I develop this?

A.J. Jacobs has written a couple best sellers, both with very unusual premises. The first, “The Know-It-All: One Man’s Humble Quest to Become the Smartest Person in the World” is an autobiographical account of a year-long experiment. He decided to read the entire Encyclopedia Britannica from A-Z, or more accurately, from a-ak to Zywiec. This really peaked my interest. It is so off-the-wall that it sounds like something I would try and attempt, if I had that much time. Instead of reading the encyclopedia, I could read the book and live vicariously though Jacobs. I found the introduction and the first chapter online on A.J.’s website, and after reading it, I was hooked.

I immediately went to Borders and picked up the book. I continued reading it in the Borders cafe. I was startled and interrupted by a girl who asked me in an accusatory tone, “What are you reading?” I quickly mentioned that I was reading a book by a guy who reads the encyclopedia and talks about it. She snapped, “You were laughing out loud so much, I thought it had to be interesting. But what’s so funny about the encyclopedia?” I told her that Jacobs talks about oddball trivia, all this crazy stuff that he is reading about, relates it to his life, and tries to impress people at cocktail parties with all his new found “knowledge”. His attempts to impress usually backfire and the stories of these incidents are always laughable. She is so rude I don’t even know why she is continuing to talk to me, but she tries to put me on the defensive, “So… he is making fun of the encyclopedia, that’s real smart.” I fall into her trap. “He’s not really making fun of it. He relates it to his life and makes all these crazy references, and it is absolutely great!” She gives me a puzzled look, tries to argue with me and obviously thinks she is above this kind of humor. “Just check out the book and see if you like it!” I exclaim, hoping she will get lost. Then, I go back to my reading. Seriously, some people need to lighten up.

In the book, Jacobs also talks about his personal life, like how he thought he was “the smartest boy in the world” when he was a kid growing up, all of his rationalizations of this and his disappointing discovery that it may not be 100% accurate. He talks about his rivalry with his father, who started to read the encyclopedia but only got up to the mid Bs. He calls up his father and tells him “I am going to finish what you started”. “I’m not sure I follow” his dad responds. He chronicles his ongoing rivalry with his brother-in-law Eric, which is too funny to explain, just read the book. A.J. chronicles the perpetual annoyance of his wife as he weaves facts from the encyclopedia into daily conversation on every topic. It gets to the point where she institutes a $1 fine every time he mentions any “irrelevant fact”.

Jacobs interviews Alex Trebek of Jeopardy! fame with the intention of tripping him up with his new found trivia. He joins Mensa International, competes in a crossword puzzle championship, spends a day at his old middle school trying to impress the kids and teachers, goes on “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?”, tries to outsmart the guides and patrons of several museums, makes a lot of really corny intellectual jokes with the intent of convincing people he is really smart, and countless other crazy escapades.

I was glued to the book since I got it and read it within a matter of a few days. Even when I was hanging out with friends, I couldn’t put the book down but instead transitioned to reading it out loud for 2 hours to them.

Now that I’ve finished reading it, I feel the urge to read it again. I feel like A.J. Jacobs is my friend. I got to know him very well by reading the book. His personal life, his business life, his quirks and insecurities. Now if I could just get him to be my friend on Facebook, all would be right with the world. The best part is, I feel that Jacobs’ writing style is starting to rub off on me, if ever so slightly. Mission accomplished.

Now, I’ll be reading another book by A.J. Jacobs, called “The Year of Living Biblically: One Man’s Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible” which features Jacobs following all 700 or so laws he found reading the Bible, in both the old and new testaments. I expect that it will be even more hilarious and also enlightening. I will keep you posted on that.

“The Know-It-All” will make you laugh. And according to a study done by the University of Maryland Medical Center, laughter was found to prevent heart disease. As you may or may not know, Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States today. This study gives new meaning to the saying “Laughter is the best medicine”.

The Top Seven Marketing Mistakes

Monday, November 24th, 2008

In my view, nearly all government statistics about reasons for business failures are nonsense.

Undercapitalization, inexperience, or poor management are usually blamed for all business disasters.

Of course, there can be one or several more causes that result in a business going “belly up.”

However, from what I’ve seen, marketing mistakes are by far the primary reason businesses do not survive. This includes companies which consider themselves direct marketers as well as those who do not.

Here are the seven most common marketing mistakes:

1. Management treats marketing as a business expense or simply a department rather than a necessary business investment.

Solution: Marketing should be treated as the driving force Idaho truck accident lawyers any company. It is the only function that brings in cash. The other major functions in a company are necessary. But they all spend cash. This includes the primary business departments of finance, production and research.

To market any product or service successfully, the company must do two things:

A. Provide marketing with sufficient resources

B. Put marketing at the heart of its business strategy

The whole company should be focused on the needs and wants of customers and be prepared to satisfy their demands.

Marketing must be part of the philosophy of all entrepreneurs and managers.

2. Management does not know specifically what it costs to recruit a new customer. Plus, there are no accurate statistics on the average customer lifetime value.

Without this knowledge, it is impossible to make sound decisions. You cannot determine how much to invest in marketing. If you spend more to gain a customer than their lifetime value, ultimately you will go broke. In the absence of this information, many businesses can and often do fail. To make matters worse, few of the casualties understand why they failed.

Solution: Before you invest large sums on marketing, determine the average lifetime value of a customer. An excellent book that I highly recommend on this topic is The Loyalty Factor by Frederick Reicheld.

3. Management makes no attempt to build a customer database. This is especially so with most retailers, restauranteurs and department store owners. However, I’ve seen this in many other businesses.

Solution: A company’s database of customers is potentially its biggest asset. It’s much more valuable than equipment, inventory, etc. This is not only true of companies that utilize mail order or Internet marketing. Every single company that wants to survive and prosper needs to build a database.

4. The company does not communicate often enough with its customers. The result is lower sales and profits than are otherwise possible.

Solution: Contact your customers a minimum of once a month. When I started my first business at age 21, I too made many mistakes. The business somehow survived and became a chain of retail confectionery stores called Peterson’s House of Fudge. At first I sent my customers an offer every six months. So I tried sending a sales letter every three months. My business doubled. I then began mailing every other month. My business again increased proportionately.

I wound up with the ideal and most profitable interval– once a month.

At first I thought contacting customers every 30 days might be too often and that customers would get turned off.

But that didn’t happen. I got Ohio auto insurance quote feedback as well as higher sales. Providing your customers like, or even love, your product or service, as they should, they want to hear from you frequently.

This, of course, is in the context of your sending excellent offers, excellent copy and excellent information.

Indeed, if you are not in frequent contact, your customers will quickly begin to forget about you. Many will start buying from your competitors.

I urge you to contact your customers at least every 30 days (occasionally with special offers a week apart is perfectly fine too).

Your form of contact can be an e-mail, postcard, catalog, telephone call or personal visit. I’ve found the most effective method of regular contact is with a well-written sales letter.

Rarely do I find a company of any kind which systematically mines the real gold in any business–the customer database. Make sure you do not make this mistake.

Making offers to your customer database is often referred to as the “back end” in direct marketing jargon. But every business should cash in on the huge potential of existing customers by simply making frequent offers to them and giving them more opportunities to do business with you.

5. Management has no method of accurately measuring the results from its advertising investments. This is especially so with so-called image advertising.

Solution: The way this is done is to seek a direct response in each promotion. This can be a coupon, telephone call or store visit. Code each promotion. Then when an order is received or a customer visits your establishment, you can appropriately trace it to the particular promotion.

The coding system can be numbers or letters. If you use the telephone you can utilize separate telephone numbers for each advertisement. Or you can simply ask the caller which ad or letter they are responding to.

6. As many companies begin to enjoy some early success, many develop a disease that I call “Big-Company-Itis.” They start having endless, non-productive meetings. They become bureaucratic. They move as slow as molasses.

Instead of continuing to insist upon a high level of employee performance and keeping a close watch and control over costs, management takes its foot off the brake. Costs can spiral out of control. Employee morale can suffer. Soon the company is in deep trouble.

Solution: The secret is to think big but operate much like a small business. Well-managed, large organizations that are highly successful are run more like a small entrepreneurial business. Managers have profit center responsibility. Their job is to help increase revenue or reduce costs, or both. They are held accountable. They maintain the financial controls and quick response of a lean and mean small business.

7. Management has no systemized upselling procedure in place to upgrade both new and existing customers to a larger sale. Result? Lower sales volume and lower profits than otherwise could be obtained.

Surprisingly, companies I’ve observed that market direct to consumers, such as mail-order businesses, tend to be incredibly poor at telephone communications and upselling.

Well-managed and properly trained customer service people can add 30%-60% in added sales volume without any increase in marketing or administrative costs. Your only cost is the cost of goods sold. Best of all, your customers are the beneficiaries of more value and variety for their money. Everyone wins.

But here is where it becomes really interesting. Your gross sales will be much higher. But your net profit will increase by a huge multiple. I’ve helped companies achieve huge increases in their net profit just by learning effective and professional telephone techniques. It’s not unusual to increase profits as much as 5 or even 10 times!

Effective telephone communications and upselling are the main reasons for the huge success of my own companies. My clients for whom I conduct training of their customer service representatives have experienced similar results.

Solution: Develop a strategy which includes the following:

A. Create an incentive compensation plan for your customer service representatives (CSR’s) based on added sales. Depending on your profit margins, this can be for example 5% to 10% of additional sales.

B. Run a daily special offered as an “add on” that provides great value for the customer. For example, you can offer a new product at half price.

C. Prepare a verbatim script on how to present the special.

Tip: The selling price. Your special offer should not exceed 30% of your average order. This makes the decision to accept the special an easy one.

D. Provide your CSR’s with some basic telephone training. This should include the principles of active listening, voice pitch, pacing, learning to present things in a hearable way, and some gentle closing-the-sale techniques. A big factor is learning the secrets of boosting the sales without any pressure whatsoever.

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

If you are one of the many millions of smoker who want to quit smoking, you will have most likely used the phrase ‘I am giving up smoking’ at one time or another.

This article will show you this statement may actually be quite damaging psychologically. The phrase ‘giving up’ actually carries quite negative connotations.

You may not ever be able to ‘give up’ until you quit the phrase ‘giving up.’

When someone is trying to stop smoking, it is a positive experience. They have realised that enough is enough, and no longer want to endanger the health and lives of themselves (or the ones that they love).

So why is such a positive move branded with the strongly negative term “giving up”?

We all use it when we talk about stopping smoking (the smoker included.) The problem is the continual use of the term “giving up” doesn’t benefit the smoker in any way; in fact it may hamper the whole stop smoking process. Let me explain why.

‘Giving up’ insinuates loss. You ‘give up’ daily treats to save money. You ‘give up’ positives in your life. When the smoker uses the phrase ‘giving up smoking’ it reinforces the negative Illinois motorcycle accident attorneys wrong) thought that the smoker is stopping something positive.

Many people fail (sometimes over and over again) to stop smoking because of this “I am giving up” mentality. So how does a smoker get around this problem?

It would be nearly impossible for a smoker to ask everyone they know not use the term “giving up”. When they here this term is up to them to remind themselves that they are not actually “giving up…” anything. In fact they gaining an unendable list of positives.

More importantly the smoker needs to change their own way of thinking. The act of smoking must always be thought of as a negative, while the act of stopping as always a positive. Every time a smoker has a positive thought about the act of smoking it brings them one step closer to having a cigarette.

The best way to keep thinking of stopping as a positive, is to think about all the things that are gained by not smoking. This can be anything that relates to the smoker and the list is infinite.

Some examples include:

  • “I am gaining years back on my life”
  • “I am gaining more money in my pocket each week”
  • “I am gaining the opportunity to see my kids and grandkids grow up”
  • “I am regaining my sense of taste and smell”

The smoker can choose the positive aspects that suit them best. Thinking positively will help keep motivation high and make it much easier to put those cigarettes down for good.

She would like to get a college degree and earn lots of money. Whenever she finds someone who shows an interest in her, or an opportunity for a well paying challenging job she turns it into something distasteful. As soon as the auto insurance specialist presents itself for her to get what she wants, she throws away the gift by not showing up, and disrespecting the gift givers. She kills off her desire the moment it becomes a real prospect, denying herself her dreams. She feels powerful when controlling her needs, but this is temporary. Very soon she is bemoaning her unsatisfactory asp sql server hosting and envious of those who are successful.

It takes both the child’s excitement and zest for life to create wishes and visions for your life, and the adult to make it a reality. Both operate within you. Those like Tracy who self-sabotage, operate by splitting the child and adult parts into two warring camps. The adult conducts life in order to survive by achieving the basic minimum for that purpose - satisfactory interpersonal skills, high school diploma, and a respectable if mediocre job. The child is blind to the ways and means for success. For to be aware would mean taking responsibility and acting on it. That often stirs up the terror of having to go through life alone. The internal dialogue of the blind part goes something like this, “ if I can manage my life and take care of things, I will not need anyone, and therefore I will not have any excuse for seeking out attachments. I cannot survive alone, so it is better not to be grown up and responsible.’

Apparent advantages in keeping the adult and child part of you separate

* Killing off your desires means killing off yourself - so no need to make an effort

* You convince yourself that you are strong and need nothing and nobody

* You avoid the risks of attempting new things, failing and being disappointed

* You have someone else to blame when things go wrong

* You can legitimately ask to be taken care of in ways that work for you

Disadvantages of keeping the child and adult part of you separate

* You feel empty and unsatisfied

* You use temporary means to quell the emptiness like food, sex, substances, to no avail.

* You go through life blind to your own power

* You deprive yourself of what you most want, and feel a failure

* You are miserable, envious of others and angry when that child part of you isn’t taken care of.

* People don’t take care of you for very long, and you do end up alone

Tips on Becoming Your Own Success Story
* Begin a supportive dialogue between the child and adult parts of yourself
* Accept that you have both these parts, good and bad and that the sum of all the parts is the greatest, strongest and best hope you have for being successful.

* Give yourself permission to meet your own needs. If you take care of yourself, others will be attracted to you and be willing to partner with you in that process.

* Learn the art of asking for what you want, rather than expecting others to know and magically provide it for you.

* You are the author of your own biography. Begin to write it by relating to yourself as an ally and not an enemy from whom you need protection.
