Most of us, at one time or another, have tried our hand at owning a house plant or two. Some thumbs are naturally a little greener than others, however, you can easily learn how to better care for your potted companions if you haven’t been successful in the past. There are several common mistakes people make when it come to caring for houseplants — the following should help you along nicely.

The first important requirement is adequate light. Without it, you’ll have very little luck keeping your plants alive. Think ahead of time and determine where you’ll put your plants so they can enjoy as much sunlight as possible. You may even have to move some around throughout the day as the sun moves around your home but the effort will pay off in the long run.

Next comes water. This in itself sounds simple enough, but the key is to strike a balance. Next is fertilizer, and then good soil. Fertilizer for nutrients, and good soil for a healthy root system and a decrease in disease.

Many plants have died many horrible deaths at our hands, preventable ones at that. We usually end up killing them with kindness, or neglect. We’ll now dig a little deeper into how to stop killing your houseplants.

Over-watering is the most common problem for houseplants. It’s often just a case of not knowing the specific plants water requirements. It pays to find out which species need and how often. Most plants only need to be watered once every five days or so. Always feel the soil to make sure it actually needs water.

Under-watering is another offender. The fact that we live busy lives is usually the reason. If you can write yourself a note, or even delegate the task, even if it’s just checked every few days or so. You can even keep a vessel of water near the plants for convenience.

Poor soil quality, or the wrong type of soil is the next problem usually encountered. Some plants need different soil types then others. For instance, consider a cactus vs. a fern. A commercial potting soil is best to use for indoor planting. Stay away from soil from your garden, recycled soil and top soil. The main reason is a lack of proper nutrients, and potential disease lingering in the soil, especially garden soil. If you suspect a fungus problem, seek treatment immediately or it could spread.

Having your plants exposed to extreme temperatures can be a problem too. Never keep your plants on or close to heat sources, including vents and stoves. The same applies to cold extremes, so plants in window sills where frost lurks or in front of a fan are no-no’s. Some plants do well in the moisture of a bathroom though, such as a fern — so there are rare exceptions.

Lastly, over fertilizing your plants will surely kill them. In fact they’re better off not buy cheap Viagra fertilized at all. Always use a houseplant appropriate fertilizer too.

The President’s Parasite and Other Short Stories is a rich collection of slice of life vignettes written with a melancholy flavor and a twist of dark humor in an easy-to-read conversational tone. Each story deserves a review of its own, but for this review I’ll mention a couple of my favorites. Jim Musgrave’s engaging characters in Remembering to Laugh opens a window into everyday life into the “invisible America” that no one wants to see. This story’s protagonist is a Jewish woman who marries a blue-eyed, red-headed Irish cop much to his mother’s chagrin. The story highlights the changing relationship of the mother and wife as the two women learn to work together when the father-in-law, a Viet Nam vet with Alzheimer’s, needs to be cared for and the husband ends up in Iraq as a hostage. I could write an entire review on this story alone, and recommend it highly.

The Wager portrays a man who wins 117 million dollars in a lottery and bets his pastor that he can cause more trouble by trying to do good with his winnings than he would if he squanders it. If he doesn’t, he’ll give the rest of the money to the church, but if he wins the Pastor agrees to change the church into a Church of Satan. The pastor takes the bet. Talk about good versus evil! If you want to know how it plays out, you’ll have to buy the book.

The short story IS NOT dead. Jim’s stories vary enough that there’s no one marketing umbrella formula that can lump them together other than original, creative and thought provoking. His work affects the mind in a subtle way, much like Twilight Zone. It entertains but grabs you and doesn’t just let go until it threads into your mind and makes you think.

Old hot rodders had a saying: “The only substitute for cubic inches is more cubic inches.” That may be true for hot rods, but in the computer world…the only substitute for Viagra soft tabs memory is more ram memory.

Make no mistake, the most important thing you can do to improve the performance of your Power Mac G5 is add more ram. Unless the ram slots of your G5 are already maxed out, no other add-on will provide as much performance improvement as a ram increase.

Don’t assume just any memory will work, however. Different versions of the G5 utilize different ram chips, and even chips that meet the published specifications have been known to cause problems. To avoid frustration, only ram designed to meet Apple’s strict guidelines should be used. That doesn’t mean you have to buy ram from Apple — OEM ram chips are generally more expensive than third-party modules. Just make sure you buy from a vendor who guarantees that their ram chips will work correctly in a Power Mac G5.

You could pay a technician to install new memory, but the task of adding DIMM (Dual In-line Memory Module) chips to a G5 is quite simple. Generally, it only takes a few minutes, even if you take your time.

The original Power Mac G5 units shipped with a meager 512MB ram, barely enough to run OS X, let alone get some work done. Time to fix that with a ram upgrade.

Make sure you are well grounded

Start by turning off the machine and disconnecting all cables except the power cord. Before you disconnect the power cable, touch the PCI access covers on the back of the case to dissipate any static electricity.

Some vendors include a grounding strap with new memory orders. If you don’t have access to a ground strap, you have to be very cautious about static electricity. A static charge can do bad things to your new memory chips, as well as internal computer components. You should be safe by following the recommendation to touch the metal chassis with the power off and the computer plugged in.

Opening the Power Mac G5 case

Unplug the power cord before proceeding. Open the case by lifting the lever on the back of the machine. This allows you to lift off the aluminum side panel from the computer enclosure.

Once you remove the side panel, you can remove the clear plastic air deflector. NOTE: the deflector is necessary to properly cool the G5, so don’t misplace it.

The beauty of the G5 case is that no tools are required to access most of the components. The ram sockets are located behind the processor fan assembly. To gain access the sockets, simply grasp the handle on the fan buy Cialis and slide it toward you until it comes free.

If there are empty slots on the mother board, you can populate these with your new ram chips. In cases where all the sockets are filled with smaller capacity chips, these will need to be removed in order to install larger modules. If you are removing smaller chips, unclip the locking tabs and press downward on the tabs. This will force the old DIMMs out of the socket. The DIMM modules are engineered to fit into the memory slots in only one direction.

Lock your new ram chips in place

If the chip is inserted correctly, pushing the chip down will force the locking tabs to swing up and secure the module in place. It is good practice to manually push on the tabs to make sure they are in the fully locked position.

Repeat this process for the lower bank and the basic installation is complete. Reinstall the fan assembly, the air deflector and the aluminum side plate. Reinstall the cables and power cord.

When you press the power button, if everything is installed correctly, you should hear the familiar Macintosh start up chime. Wait for the machine to finish the start up process and then click on the “About this Mac” under the Apple Logo in the menu bar. The Memory field should reflect the newly installed memory.

WHAT IS AN ACCELEROMETER?

An accelerometer is an instrument for measuring acceleration, detecting and measuring vibrations, or for measuring acceleration due to gravity (inclination).
